What are the biggest myths and misconceptions about endometriosis?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

Endometriosis can be confusing, and there are many myths surrounding this condition.

It’s important to clarify a few key points to help you understand it better.

  • Not Just a Menstrual Disorder: A common belief is that endometriosis is simply a menstrual issue. While it is related to the cells found in the lining of the uterus, these cells can also grow outside the uterus. Understanding this difference helps researchers find better treatments that focus on the endometriosis cells without affecting the uterus itself.

  • More Than Retrograde Menstruation: Another misconception is that endometriosis is only caused by retrograde menstruation, a theory that suggests menstrual blood flows backward into the pelvic cavity. However, this isn’t the only way endometriosis can develop. People have reported cases of endometriosis even after having a hysterectomy or in those born without a uterus.

  • Pregnancy is Not a Cure: Lastly, some believe pregnancy can cure endometriosis because women often experience less pain during pregnancy. While some may find relief, studies show that after pregnancy, about one-third of individuals see their symptoms improve, one-third experience no change, and one-third may even have worsening symptoms. Thus, suggesting pregnancy as a solution isn’t always helpful, especially for those who aren’t ready for that step.
