What can I expect after my endometriosis surgery?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

After your endometriosis surgery, here’s what you can expect during your recovery:

  • Immediate Recovery: You’ll wake up in a recovery area where medical staff will monitor you for safety. Most likely, you’ll be able to go home the same day since this is usually an outpatient procedure.

  • Post-Surgery Restrictions: Once home, you’ll need to follow certain guidelines to aid your healing:

    • Avoid driving while taking prescribed pain medication, typically only needed for a couple of days.

    • No bathtub or swimming pool use for three weeks.

    • Avoid anything in the vagina (like tampons or sexual activity) and heavy lifting (no more than 25 pounds) for three weeks.

    • Light activities, including taking stairs and showering, are fine right away.

  • Follow-up Care: You’ll have a virtual check-up about three weeks after your surgery to ensure your incisions are healing well. If everything looks good, you’ll be cleared from these restrictions. Regarding returning to work, it’s best to take one to three weeks off depending on your job’s nature. While you can go back sooner if you feel up to it and are off pain meds, it’s essential to listen to your body as recovery times can vary.
