What can help me manage the pain from my fibroids?
BY DR. BROOKE WINNERManaging pain from Fibroids can involve several options, depending on the cause of the discomfort.
Here are the steps to consider:
Over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen and Tylenol can be effective. Ibuprofen can be taken up to 800 milligrams (about four Advil), and Tylenol can be taken up to one gram (about two extra-strength Tylenol). These medications work better when taken together and on a schedule rather than occasionally. It’s important to take them with a full glass of water and some food.
If heavy bleeding is an issue, hormonal birth control options like pills, patches, or IUDs can help reduce bleeding, which may alleviate pain. For larger Fibroids, treatments that shrink them include a shot called Lupron and uterine fibroid embolization, though these may cause their own discomfort initially. If necessary, a surgical option like a myomectomy can remove the Fibroids while allowing for future pregnancies, while a hysterectomy permanently removes the uterus and eliminates the chance of Fibroids returning.
It’s essential to consult your doctor to find the best approach tailored to your specific situation and health history.
