What is a "tubal ligation"?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

A tubal ligation is a surgical procedure designed to prevent pregnancy by blocking the fallopian tubes, which are essential for egg transfer from the ovaries to the uterus.

In the past, doctors would tie or burn sections of the fallopian tubes to achieve this. Over time, different methods, like using clips or rubber bands, were also used to obstruct the tubes.

Recent medical insights indicate that ovarian cancer may originate in the fallopian tubes. Because of this, many doctors today prefer to remove the entire fallopian tube instead of just blocking it, which can potentially lower the risk of developing ovarian cancer.

  • Patients considering a tubal ligation need to be absolutely certain they do not want to conceive in the future; this procedure is generally irreversible.

  • If a woman who has undergone a tubal ligation wishes to become pregnant later on, she would need to rely on techniques like in vitro fertilization (IVF).

In summary, while a tubal ligation is an effective form of contraception, it requires serious consideration due to its permanent nature.
