What causes endometriosis?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

Endometriosis is a complex condition, and while we don’t fully understand its causes, there are several theories that researchers explore.

Here’s what we know:

  • Sampson’s Theory: One of the oldest ideas suggests that cells from the uterine lining backflow through the fallopian tubes during menstruation. However, this doesn’t explain why endometriosis can occur in people without uteruses, like in fetuses and even some men.

  • Cell Migration Theory: A newer theory proposes that some individuals might be born with cells in the wrong place, possibly due to the way the uterus develops in the fetus. This could explain why some women experience painful periods from the start.

  • Genetic Factors: There seems to be a strong genetic link, as having a close relative with endometriosis increases your risk significantly.

Although these theories provide insight, medical research in this area is limited due to insufficient funding. This is why our understanding of endometriosis remains incomplete, leaving many questions unanswered for patients and caregivers alike.
