What is excision surgery for endometriosis?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

Excision surgery for endometriosis is a specialized procedure that aims to remove the endometriosis tissue.

Excision surgery for endometriosis is a specialized procedure that aims to remove the endometriosis tissue. When treating endometriosis using a minimally invasive method called laparoscopy, surgeons can do two main things: ablate or excise the endometriosis.

  • Ablation involves burning away the tissue, but this may not fully remove it.

  • Excision is preferred by experienced surgeons because it completely removes the endometriosis, which can often be deeper than expected.

There are several benefits to choosing excision over ablation. First, it ensures that all the endometriosis is taken out, not just the surface. Second, excision allows surgeons to remove any surrounding tissue that may have become hardened due to inflammation, potentially providing better pain relief. Lastly, excision provides a tissue sample for lab analysis, confirming the diagnosis.

Because of these reasons, surgeons who frequently perform endometriosis surgeries strongly recommend excision as the most effective treatment option.
