What is the recovery process like after tubal ligation or salpingectomy?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

After undergoing a tubal ligation or salpingectomy, it’s important to understand the recovery process so you can take care of yourself properly.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Surgery Type: These procedures are often done laparoscopically, meaning they’re minimally invasive and usually require just a same-day outpatient visit.

  • Pain Management: You’ll likely receive narcotic pain medication to help with discomfort, but many people find they don’t need it for more than a couple of days.

  • Activity Restrictions:

    • Avoid driving if you’re taking narcotics.

    • Steer clear of bathtubs and swimming pools for three weeks.

    • No vaginal activities and heavy lifting for three weeks is also advised, though smaller incisions (5 mm) might not require lifting restrictions.

    • If a larger (10 mm) incision is used, it’s best to avoid heavy lifting for a few weeks to prevent complications like a hernia.

Following these guidelines will help support a smooth recovery after your surgery.
