What are the different types of surgery for endometriosis?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

When it comes to treating endometriosis through surgery, doctors generally rely on two main methods: ablation and excision.

Here’s a brief overview of these techniques:

  • Ablation: This method involves burning away the endometriosis. While studies indicate that ablation and excision are often equally effective for early-stage disease, many experienced surgeons feel that excision is the superior choice.

  • Excision: This process means removing the endometriosis entirely. It’s thought to be better because it ensures complete removal, especially since deep lesions can sometimes extend further than they appear. Excision also removes surrounding hard tissue that can cause pain and provides a tissue sample for lab confirmation of the diagnosis.

In addition to ablation and excision, there are other specific procedures. For example, if a person has an endometrioma cyst on the ovary, the best approach is to remove the cyst rather than drain it, which can lead to recurrence.

In some cases, other organs such as the fallopian tubes or appendix might need to be removed, and a hysterectomy may be performed if there’s evidence of adenomyosis. Each surgery is chosen based on the patient’s unique condition to help manage symptoms effectively.
