What are the different types of ovarian cysts?
BY DR. BROOKE WINNER
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on the ovaries, which are essential organs in the female reproductive system.
Here’s a quick overview of the different types of ovarian cysts:
Normal Cysts: These cysts develop during the monthly menstrual cycle and usually come and go with ovulation. When an egg matures, the cyst around it enlarges before bursting, releasing the egg. Occasionally, bleeding can occur when a cyst ruptures, resulting in what is called a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst.
Benign (Non-cancerous) Cysts: The most common types include:
Dermoid Cysts: Unusual cysts that can contain hair, fat, and sometimes teeth. They are also known as teratomas.
Endometriomas: Cysts lined with endometriosis tissue, which can fill with old blood and typically persist over time.
Simple Cysts: Fluid-filled cysts that usually indicate a normal, harmless condition.
Other benign variants include serous and mucinous cystadenomas.
Abnormal Cysts: While most are benign, there are also borderline cysts that can show some malignant traits, as well as ovarian cancer, which is more serious.
Understanding these cyst types is essential for proper monitoring and treatment if needed.
