Is a pelvic exam painful if I have an ovarian cyst?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

Whether a pelvic exam is painful when you have an ovarian cyst can vary based on the type of cyst.

Here are some important points to consider:

  • Normal Cysts: Most ovarian cysts are normal and usually go away with ovulation. In such cases, a pelvic exam should not be particularly painful.

  • Painful Cysts: If you have an ovarian cyst that already causes pain, the exam may feel more uncomfortable.

  • Endometriosis: If you have endometriosis, especially with an endometrioma cyst, it can result in significant discomfort. This is especially true during a part of the pelvic exam known as the bimanual exam, where the doctor checks the size and shape of the uterus and ovaries.

In summary, the level of discomfort during a pelvic exam with an ovarian cyst really depends on the type of cyst and whether it’s causing pain.
