When can I have sex again after ovarian cyst surgery?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

After having surgery for an ovarian cyst, when you can resume sexual activity largely depends on how the surgery was performed and if any additional procedures were conducted.

Here are some important points to consider:

  • Most ovarian cyst surgeries today are performed using minimally invasive techniques, like laparoscopic surgery. This approach involves small incisions and a camera, allowing for quicker recovery.

  • Generally, if your surgery was a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy where only the cyst was removed, you may be cleared to have sex after three weeks.

  • Some surgeons may allow earlier sexual activity, especially if cervix dilation wasn’t performed during your operation.

It’s essential to have a conversation with your surgeon about your specific situation for their guidance. But typically, three weeks is a good timeframe to aim for in most cases.
