What is your best advice for someone starting a journey to find treatment for endometriosis?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

If you’re experiencing extremely painful periods that affect your daily life, it’s important to understand that this is not normal. If your doctor tells you otherwise, consider seeking a second opinion.

Here’s a step-by-step approach for finding effective treatment for endometriosis:

  • Get a Referral: Start by asking your primary care doctor for a referral to an OBGYN, gynecologist, or an endometriosis excision specialist.

  • Start with Imaging: Most doctors will recommend a pelvic ultrasound to examine the uterus and ovaries for any obvious issues causing pain. It’s essential to note that a negative ultrasound doesn’t rule out endometriosis; it may just mean that certain cysts aren’t visible.

  • Specialized Tests: Some clinics may use a dynamic ultrasound to see how the organs move, which can indicate the absence of adhesions. If your organs move freely, you may have a less severe form of endometriosis, while limited movement could mean more advanced stages.

Finding a doctor who specializes in endometriosis is crucial. Doctors who focus on this condition usually have extensive training and experience, which can lead to faster diagnoses and more effective surgery if needed.
