If I had a previous surgeries on my ovary, do I have an increase risk of an ovarian cyst?
BY DR. BROOKE WINNERIf you have had surgery on your ovary to remove an ovarian cyst, it is possible you may face a higher risk of developing another cyst in the future.
Here are some key points to consider:
The most common types of benign ovarian cysts are dermoid cysts (or teratomas), which can contain fats, hair, and sometimes teeth. These cysts occur when stem cells do not develop properly.
Another type is endometrioma cysts, which are associated with endometriosis and can fill with old blood over time.
Both types of cysts can return after surgery, so being aware of your body is crucial.
With this in mind, it is important to remain vigilant. If you start experiencing new symptoms or if your doctor notices that your ovaries seem enlarged during an examination, they may recommend a pelvic ultrasound to check for the presence of any new cysts. Always communicate with your healthcare provider about any concerns or changes you notice.
