How is endometriosis treated?
BY DR. BROOKE WINNER
Treating endometriosis depends on your symptoms and whether you want to have children.
Here are the main approaches:
Observation: If endometriosis isn’t causing any problems, sometimes just monitoring it is enough.
Pain Management: Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and Tylenol can help manage pain.
Hormonal Treatments: Birth control methods such as pills, patches, rings, and IUDs can help control symptoms by stopping menstrual cycles.
Surgery: If hormonal treatments aren’t effective or tolerated, surgical options are available. Two main types of surgery are conservative management, which removes endometriosis tissue, and a hysterectomy, which may be considered if you are done having children.
Surgery, especially when combined with a hysterectomy, can provide better and longer-lasting pain relief. It’s essential to personalize the treatment plan according to each individual’s symptoms, fertility goals, and past treatment responses. Overall, patients have a wide range of options to consider for their care.
