Who is a good candidate for a fibroid ablation?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment option for fibroids that may be suitable for certain candidates.

Here’s a quick overview of who might be a good fit:

  • Size requirements: The fibroids should be between 7 and 10 centimeters. The uterus size should be around 14 to 16 weeks, similar to pregnancy size.

  • Fertility considerations: This procedure is not recommended for individuals who wish to become pregnant in the future.

  • Surgery readiness: Candidates should be open to having surgery. Although it’s a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, it is still a major surgery.

Before considering this treatment, it’s important for patients experiencing heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding to rule out other possible causes. This often includes ensuring that pap smears are current and possibly undergoing an endometrial biopsy to check for conditions like precancer or cancer in the uterus. Proper screening is vital to ensure that radiofrequency ablation is the right choice.
