How does a radiofrequency ablation for fibroids work?

BY DR. BROOKE WINNER

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive surgery used to treat Fibroids.

Here’s how it works, step-by-step:

  • Procedure Setting: The procedure is performed in an operating room and is usually done as an outpatient surgery, meaning you can go home the same day.

  • Access: A small incision is made at the belly button, and a camera is inserted to help navigate inside the body. Additional small ports are placed on each side for instruments.

  • Identifying Fibroids: Doctors use ultrasound during the surgery to find the exact location of the Fibroids.

  • Treatment Process: A probe is inserted into the center of each Fibroid, and energy is applied to heat it. This process effectively kills the Fibroid.

  • Results: After the procedure, the Fibroid begins to soften immediately and will shrink by about one-third to one-half over the next couple of months.

Overall, the procedure is straightforward, does not involve removing the Fibroids, and does not require repairs to the uterus.
