Do symptoms always correlate with the size or number of fibroids?
BY DR. BROOKE WINNERFibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can lead to various symptoms, but these symptoms don’t always depend on their size or number.
Here’s a clearer understanding:
Location Matters: Fibroids situated near the lining of the uterus are more likely to cause heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding and can even affect fertility. Interestingly, even small fibroids in this area can lead to significant bleeding.
Bigger Isn’t Always Better: Fibroids located on the outside of the uterus may grow larger and start pressing on surrounding organs, causing pelvic pain or pressure. Larger fibroids, typically over five centimeters, often lead to what’s called bulk symptoms—like a feeling of heaviness in the pelvis or pressure on the bladder or rectum, leading to frequent urination or constipation.
Complex Symptoms: It’s important to remember that while bigger fibroids may cause pain, small ones can also be impactful, especially if they are degenerated. Therefore, considering just the size or number isn’t enough; the location and overall health situation are vital in understanding what symptoms to expect.
